Inside Out Library

Of ghostes and spirites, walking by night: and of straunge noyses, crackes, and sundrie forewarnings: which commonly happen before the death of men: great slaughters, and alterations of kingdoms.

Lavatar, Ludwig · 1596 · Thomas Creede · 27 pictures

Ludwig Lavater's treatise on apparitions, night noises and omens, in English translation printed by Thomas Creede in London in 1596 for readers arguing over whether spirits were souls, devils or delusion, and later cited as a source for Hamlet. The pictures are small woodcut initial capitals, mostly repeated T and I forms, built from curling vines, hatched leaves and buds inside a ruled square, useful as drop caps and ornament stamps.
