Old Cape Colony; a chronicle of her men and houses from 1652-1806

Trotter, Alys Fane (Keatinge), Mrs · 1903 · Westminster : A. Constable & co., ltd. · 100 pictures

A 1903 chronicle of Dutch-era Cape Colony, its settlers and their buildings, written and drawn by Alys Fane Trotter and published in Westminster for British readers with an interest in architecture and colonial history. The plates are pen-and-ink drawings of whitewashed Cape Dutch houses—scrolled gables, panelled doors, shuttered sash windows, stoep stairs and gateposts—modelled in dense parallel hatching against blank walls, giving designers reusable architectural motifs and high-contrast line texture.
