Old London silver, its history, its makers and its marks
Montague Howard's 1903 Scribner survey of English silver, written in New York for collectors, dealers and antiquarians tracing London makers and hallmarks. Halftone photographs isolate single vessels—lidded flagons, tankards, standing cups, footed bowls—against pale grounds, giving clean silhouettes, repoussé borders and struck marks that can be cut out as object outlines or ornament details.
