The old masters of Belgium and Holland = Les maîtres d'autrefois
Eugène Fromentin's 1876 essays on Flemish and Dutch painting, translated by Mary Caroline Robbins and issued in Boston by J. R. Osgood in 1882 for American readers following the galleries of Antwerp, Brussels and The Hague. The plates are dark reproductive engravings after Rubens and his contemporaries — Adoration, Descent from the Cross, Raising of the Cross — with crowded diagonal figure groups, muscular nudes and light held in a few faces and cloths against near-black grounds.
