The old masters of Belgium and Holland <Les maîtres d'autrefois>
Eugène Fromentin's 1876 art-critical travelogue on Flemish and Dutch painting, translated by Mary Caroline Robbins and issued in Boston by J. R. Osgood in 1882 for American readers and students of art history. The plates are tonal reproductive engravings after Rubens and his contemporaries — Descent from the Cross, Raising of the Cross, Adoration of the Magi — offering muscular figure groups, ladders and diagonal compositions, and deep chiaroscuro usable for dramatic religious imagery and studies of massed bodies.
