Omnia Andreae Alciati v.c. emblemata : cum commentariis, quibus emblematum omnium aperta origine, mens auctoris explicatur, & obscura omnia dubiaque illustrantur
Andrea Alciati's Latin emblem book with Claude Mignault's commentary, printed by Christophe Plantin at Antwerp in 1581 for humanist readers and Latin scholars, with woodcuts after Virgil Solis cut by Geeraard van Kampen. Each emblem is a small square scene—Mercury fording a river, a fruiting tree over water, knotted serpents, robed figures conversing—set in an architectural border of caryatids, strapwork and grotesque cartouches usable as frames and ornament.
