Omnia Andreae Alciati V.C. Emblemata : cum commentariis, quibus emblematum detecta origine, dubia omnia, et obscura illustrantur
Andrea Alciati's emblem book, first issued in 1531 and here printed at Paris in 1602 with the commentaries of Claude Mignault and Jakob de Weert, for humanist readers who read mottoes, pictures and Latin verse together. The 236 woodcuts are small square scenes—gods, personifications, animals, trees and landscapes with distant towns—each set inside a printed frame of scrolling foliage, masks and fruit, giving designers ready-made emblem vignettes and repeatable ornamental borders.
