Alciati, Andrea, 1492-1550 · 1564 · Lvgdvni, : Apud Gulielmum Rouillium... · 246 pictures

Andrea Alciato's Emblemata, the founding Latin emblem book, in the 1564 Lyon edition printed by Guillaume Rouillé for humanist readers who read each motto, picture and epigram together. The 248 small square woodcuts set single figures, gods, animals and monsters in hatched landscapes with hills, walled towns and bare trees, cut in fine parallel line with heavy black shadow; useful for compact emblematic vignettes, hybrid creatures and rayed-sun skies.
