On time : or, The young captain of the Ucayga steamer
An 1869 juvenile adventure novel by Oliver Optic (William Taylor Adams), published in Boston by Lee and Shepard for boy readers, following a young steamboat captain on an inland lake. The wood-engraved plates carry captions and page references below the image and show street crowds in top hats, boys scuffling in fields, a mounted rider before a fence, and a fainting woman in a parlor, giving designers mid-century American costume, dense cross-hatched foliage, and compact captioned vignettes.
