Opera Ioan. Goropii Becani, hactenus in lucum non edita: nempe, Hermathena, Heiroglyphica, Vertumnus, Gallica, Francica, Hispanica
Posthumous collected Latin writings of the Antwerp physician and etymologist Jan van Gorp (Goropius Becanus), edited by Laevinus Torrentius and printed by Christopher Plantin in Antwerp in 1580 for scholarly readers of emblems and hieroglyphics. The plates are large woodcut initial letters built as framed scenes: a draped winged female flanked by bearded river gods, a winged term figure, curling acanthus, and small hounds in the corners, useful as drop caps, ornament frames, and grotesque figure motifs.
