Collected writings on painting by the neoclassical painter Anton Raphael Mengs, edited by his friend the Spanish diplomat José Nicolás de Azara and printed in Italian at Bassano by the Remondini press of Venice in 1783 for artists, connoisseurs and collectors. The surviving imagery is engraved letterpress decoration: symmetrical headpiece bands of curling foliate scrollwork, fleur-de-lis sprays and strapwork, usable as rule borders, chapter openers and repeating ornamental strips.
