Opticks; or, A treatise of the reflections, inflections and colours of light
Isaac Newton's Opticks in its 1718 London edition, printed for W. and J. Innys, setting out experiments on the reflection, refraction and colours of light for the Royal Society and its readers. The folding plates are engraved line diagrams: prisms and lenses with ruled ray paths, circles divided into lettered colour sectors, a candle projecting onto a screen, all in fine black line on bare paper with italic figure labels, useful as geometric ray schematics, technical lettering, and sparse page structure.
