Ori Apollinis Niliaci, De sacris Aegyptiorum notis, Aegyptiacè expressis : libri duo, iconibus illustrati, & aucti : nunc primùm in latinum ac gallicum sermonem conversi
A Latin and French edition of Horapollo's Hieroglyphica, the ancient treatise on Egyptian sacred signs, printed in Paris in 1574 by Galliot du Pré and Jean Ruelle with woodcuts after Jean Cousin, made for humanist readers of emblems. The 377 small cuts, some in braided or beaded borders, set figures, animals, ships and chariots in hatched landscapes with distant hilltop towns, giving designers compact emblem vignettes and dense line-shaded skies and water.
