The origin of laws, arts, and sciences, and their progress among the most ancient nations

Goguet, Antoine Yves, 1716-1758, Fugère, Alexandre Conrad, Henry, Robert, 1718-1790, Spearman, Alexander, Dunn, D · 1775 · Edinburgh : George Robinson [etc.] · 10 pictures

A three-volume Enlightenment history by the French magistrate Antoine Yves Goguet, tracing the origins of law, art and science among ancient peoples, issued in English translation at Edinburgh in 1775 for antiquarians and learned subscribers. The engraved plates give measured elevations and sections of Egyptian pyramids and tombs, built from ruled courses of blockwork, scale bars and dense diagonal hatching that a designer can lift as ready-made brick patterns, gradient textures and hard-edged architectural silhouettes.
