Origin of the "stars and stripes,"
A short patriotic volume by J. William Pope on the origin of the Stars and Stripes, printed in Pittsburgh by the Brockett Press in 1916 for American general readers. The pen-and-ink plates, signed Rowland B. Newcomb, show an allegorical woman in a star-and-stripe gown among heavily hatched tree trunks, an eagle perched above her, and are mounted inside ruled Art Nouveau borders that designers can lift as line-only figure studies, foliage textures, and frame ornament.
