Ornamental design, embracing The Anatomy of pattern : The planning of ornament; The application of ornament
A three-part design manual by Lewis Foreman Day, published by Batsford in London in 1888 for students and working decorators learning how patterns are built and fitted to surfaces. The plates are black-line wood-engraved repeats — damask florals, interlaced strapwork, tile and stained-glass panels — several annotated with handwritten notes marking repeat units and reversed drops.
