Our flag number, with 1197 flags in full colors and 300 additional illustrations in black and white
A 1917 National Geographic Society special issue on flags, compiled by Byron McCandless and Gilbert Grosvenor in Washington for the magazine's general readership during the First World War. The black-and-white plates show flags on staffs drawn in engraved line-and-hatch shading, with crosses, star cantons, stripes, harps, eagles and small standing figures — useful for heraldic devices, striped fields and hatching textures.
