An outline history of painting for young people and students
An illustrated survey of painting from antiquity to the nineteenth century, written by American art historian Clara Erskine Clement Waters for students and young readers and published in New York by White, Stokes, & Allen in 1883. The 85 plates are wood-engraved reproductions of famous paintings, rendered in fine cross-hatched line: Pompeian wall paintings, Madonna and Child groups, and crowded Hogarth interiors, useful for figure groupings, drapery studies, and engraved tonal texture.
