Painters, pictures and the people
An art-appreciation volume written by the painter and Berkeley teacher Eugen Neuhaus and issued in San Francisco by Philopolis Press in 1918 for general readers learning how to look at pictures. The plates are soft monochrome halftones of paintings, mostly California landscapes: spreading live oaks, grazing sheep, bare rock outcrops and bald coastal hills under broad cloud banks, useful as grainy tonal backgrounds, tree silhouettes and pastoral vignettes.
