Painters and their works: a dictionary of great artists who are not now alive, giving their names, lives, and the prices paid for their works at auctions
A three-volume reference dictionary of deceased painters compiled by Ralph N. James and published by L. U. Gill in London in 1896, listing artists' lives alongside auction prices for collectors, dealers, and connoisseurs. The plates are facsimiles of painters' signatures and monograms reproduced in line, showing dated autographs by Cuyp, Berchem, Netscher, Poussin and others as isolated black script on blank ground, useful as ready-made calligraphic marks, hand-lettering models, or period-accurate signature ornament.
