Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts
Horace Walpole's history of painters, engravers and other artists working in England, compiled from George Vertue's notebooks and re-edited by James Dallaway for the 1826 Shakspeare Press edition in London, aimed at collectors and antiquarians. The plates are steel and copper engraved portraits of artists in Tudor and Stuart dress, half-length against plain or lightly shaded grounds, useful for ruffs, slashed sleeves, plumed caps, palettes and brushes, and finely hatched beards and faces.
