Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts
Horace Walpole's history of painting in England, built from George Vertue's notebooks and re-edited by James Dallaway, issued in London in 1826 by the Shakspeare Press for collectors and connoisseurs. Its plates are engraved bust and half-length portraits of seventeenth-century painters in ruffs, falling collars and long curls, rendered in tight parallel hatching against plain or oval grounds, useful for cut-out heads and period costume detail.
