Anecdotes of painting in England : with some account of the principal artists, and incidental notes on other arts
Horace Walpole's history of painters, engravers and gardeners in England, compiled from George Vertue's notes and reissued in 1826 by the Shakspeare Press in London for collectors and connoisseurs. The plates are small wood-engraved head-and-shoulders portraits of artists, mostly seventeenth-century men in long curled periwigs and soft collars, built from dense hatching that suits reuse as vignettes, initial-page ornaments or cut-out heads.
