Palerme & Syracuse
Charles Diehl, a French Byzantinist, wrote Palerme & Syracuse for the Paris series of illustrated city monographs published by H. Laurens in 1907, aimed at educated travellers and students of medieval art in Sicily. The 119 plates are halftone photographs and line engravings of Norman-Arab church interiors, interlaced arcading, mosaic-covered vaults, carved cloister capitals and Greek theatre ruins, supplying pointed-arch geometry, tessellated pattern fields and weathered stone texture.
