A German edition of Cesare Ripa's Iconologia, issued in Augsburg in 1758 by publisher Johann Georg Hertel with plates drawn by Gottfried Eichler the Younger and engraved by Jeremias Wachsmuth and Emanuel Eichel, made for artists, engravers and craftsmen needing standard personifications. The 214 etched plates each place a robed allegorical figure with her attributes among broken columns, urns, obelisks and shaggy trees, with a small biblical or classical scene behind and a Latin motto on a stone block or cartouche; useful for attribute-bearing figures, inscription cartouches and rococo ruin-and-foliage framing.
