Pauli Maccii Emblemata
A Latin emblem book by Paolo Maccio, engraved by Agostino Partigino and printed by Clemente Ferroni at Bologna in 1628 for learned readers who read mottoes and moralized pictures together. Each of the 94 etchings sets a small figure scene in an open landscape or seascape — a bishop facing sea-demons, a trumpeter on a cliff, tritons, sleeping nudes — inside a border of repeated leaf ornament.
