Pavli Macii Emblemata ..
Paolo Maccio's Emblemata, a Latin emblem book printed at Bologna in 1628 for learned readers who read each picture alongside its motto and verse commentary. The 87 plates are small square etchings of figures, animals and putti set in open landscapes with distant towns and hills, each enclosed by a printed border of repeating leaf-and-bud ornament that can be lifted as a frame or rule on its own.
