Pavli Macii Emblemata ..
Paolo Maccio's Latin emblem book, printed at Bologna in 1628 for learned readers who read mottoes, pictures and verse commentary together. The 89 etched plates place armoured allegorical figures, Cupid, cattle, birds and dogs in hatched landscapes and walled gardens, each framed by a ruled border with heavy hatched skies and open foregrounds that can be lifted as small standalone scenes or silhouetted figures.
