The peerage of Scotland : a complete view of the several orders of nobility, of that ancient kingdom; their descents, marriages, issue, and relations; their creations, armorial bearings, crests, supporters, mottos, chief seats, and the high offices they possess ... together with a list of the sixteen peers, from the union to 1767 ...
A reference genealogy of the Scottish nobility compiled by Edward Kimber and printed in London in 1767 for antiquaries, lawyers, and gentry tracing descents and armorial rights; the Boston Public Library copy belonged to John Adams. Small copperplate engravings show coats of arms with crests, coronets, mottos on ribbons, and paired supporters — lions, griffins, eagles, stags, and costumed human figures — usable as compact stock ornament and badge shapes.
