Cours de peinture par principes
Roger de Piles's treatise on the principles of painting, published in Paris by Jacques Estienne in 1708 for painters, students and collectors of art. The plates indexed here are the book's printed ornament: small relief-cut headpieces and tailpieces of acanthus scrolls, urns, fleurs-de-lis, tulips and ribbon banderoles, symmetrical about a center axis and usable as rules, dividers, spot motifs or repeat borders.
