Pierre Bayle's letters arguing against superstitious readings of the comet of December 1680, reissued in 1749 by Meinard Uytwerf in Amsterdam for a learned French-reading audience. The plates here are not illustrations but book fabric: combed and stone-pattern marbled papers in red, indigo, yellow and cream, plus small woodcut headpiece ornaments of scrolling foliage and urns usable as textures, borders and spot devices.
