Phil May's ABC; fifty-two original designs forming two humorous alphabets from A to Z
An alphabet book of fifty-two pen drawings by the English caricaturist Phil May, issued in London by the Leadenhall Press in 1897 for a general adult readership amused by street types and music-hall characters. Each letter is built from its own outline, with costermongers, swells, flower sellers and dancing children posed inside or against the letterform, drawn in spare, confident brush-and-ink strokes on blank ground, useful for decorative initials and figure silhouettes.
