Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica
Newton's Principia, the Latin treatise on motion and gravitation printed in London in 1687 by Joseph Streater for the Royal Society and read by mathematicians and natural philosophers. The 187 plates are woodcut and engraved geometric diagrams set into the text: circles, ellipses, parabolas, tangents and dotted construction lines with sparse italic letter labels, useful as line-art motifs, endpapers, or diagrammatic backgrounds.
