Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica
Newton's Latin treatise on mechanics and celestial motion, edited by Roger Cotes and printed in Amsterdam in 1723 for mathematicians and natural philosophers, in a copy once owned by John Adams. The plates are geometric diagrams engraved in fine line: lettered points, axes and nested hatched arcs showing wave fronts spreading from a source, useful as ready-made line patterns, radiating fan motifs and technical annotation styles.
