Philothei [pseud.] Christliche sinne-bilder auss dem lateinischen ins teutsch gecracht

Karl Ludwig, Elector Palatine, 1617-1680, Wilhelmi, Johannes Gerlacus · 1679 · Franckfurt, bey Johann Peter Zubrodt · 101 pictures

A German translation of a Latin book of sacred emblems, printed by Johann Peter Zubrodt at Frankfurt in 1679 and credited to "Philothei," for devotional readers meditating on picture-and-motto pairs. Each of the 101 copperplates sets a small landscape inside a circle whose raised rim carries a Latin motto in capitals, framed by dense diagonal hatching: lightning over a shipwreck, a vine on bare rock, a spider's web strung between trees, sunbursts and distant towns \u2014 usable as roundel devices, motto frames, and compact engraved sky and foliage textures.
