Philothei Symbola christiana : quibus idea hominis christiani exprimitur
A Latin emblem book of 1682, printed in Leiden by the widow of Johannes van Gelder and attributed to Karl Ludwig, Elector Palatine, setting out the pattern of the Christian man in mottoes and devices for learned devotional readers. Each of the 103 engravings is a small roundel framed by a double rule, with a curved Latin motto along the rim and inside it a compact landscape — sun rays breaking over water, a smoking bastion on a cliff, a statue on a plinth, wind-lashed trees — usable as ready-made circular badges, medallion frames, or fine-line hatched skies and rockwork.
