The Photographic art-journal
An American monthly trade periodical on photography, edited by Henry Hunt Snelling and published in New York by W.B. Smith from 1851 for daguerreotypists, portrait operators and art writers. The plates indexed here are chiefly wood-engraved drop initials in which the letterform is built of hatched blocks and wrapped in morning glory, ivy and grape vines, with trailing borders that run down the margin beside the text, useful as alphabet ornaments, chapter openers and column-edge rules.
