Photographs of the "Gems of the Art Treasures Exhibition," Manchester, 1857
A photographic album of 93 albumen reproductions of paintings shown at the 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition in Manchester, taken by the London firm Caldesi and Montecchi and issued in 1858 by Colnaghi and Agnew for collectors and exhibition visitors. The plates are sepia copies of oil paintings — crowded figure groups, costume interiors, dim landscapes — with heavy shadow, blown highlights and visible frame edges, giving designers soft tonal grounds and grouped silhouettes.
