Photographs of the "Gems of the Art Treasures Exhibition," Manchester, 1857
A photographic record of paintings shown at the 1857 Art Treasures Exhibition in Manchester, made by the London firm Caldesi and Montecchi and issued in 1858 by Colnaghi and Agnew for collectors and exhibition subscribers. The albumen plates copy Old Master and British pictures in warm sepia, with soft tonal gradation, heavy shadow, and frequent flattening of detail, offering figure groups, portraits, and pastoral scenes usable as toned backgrounds or texture.
