Pia desideria: or, Divine addresses, : in three books. Illustrated with XLVII. copper-plates.
An English verse translation by Edmund Arwaker of Herman Hugo's Latin emblem book Pia desideria, printed in London in 1686 for devotional readers, with forty-seven copper-plate emblems. The small upright plates show a winged, radiant soul-figure and a kneeling penitent in landscapes of hatched hills, dark caves, starry skies and towers, offering dense line-engraved shading, night effects and compact allegorical staging.
