Pia desideria: or, Divine addresses, in three books
Edmund Arwaker's English verse rendering of Herman Hugo's Jesuit emblem book Pia desideria, printed in London by Henry Bonwicke in 1702 for devotional readers. Small copperplate emblems pair a robed female Soul with a winged, haloed Divine Love in hatched landscapes, caves and storm skies, supplying dense line texture, radiating haloes, and clear allegorical props such as swords, baskets and banners.
