Pia desideria: or, divine addresses : in three books. Illustrated with XLVII. copper-plates
An English emblem book of 1690, Edmund Arwaker's verse translation of Herman Hugo's Jesuit devotional classic Pia desideria, engraved by John Sturt and printed in London for Henry Bonwicke for Protestant lay readers. Forty-seven small copperplates set a winged soul-child and a haloed angel in hatched landscapes, with radiating suns, star-cloaked figures and cloud-borne choirs useful for light-ray motifs and compact framed vignettes.
