Picta poesis : ut pictura poesis erit
A Latin emblem book by the Lyon humanist Barthélemy Aneau, printed by Mathias Bonhomme in 1552 with woodcuts credited to Bernard Salomon and Pierre Eskrich, addressed to learned readers pairing verse with picture. The 149 small rectangular cuts set fables and moral scenes in open country — satyrs, storks and foxes, coiled snakes, sleeping figures, distant castles — with skies and hills built from parallel hatching that designers can lift as compact vignettes or texture samples.
