A pictorial chronicle of Siena
An English antiquarian account of Siena's painted tax-office panels, the tavolette di Biccherna, written by William Heywood and published in Siena by E. Torrini in 1902 for foreign readers and students of Italian art. The plates are monochrome photographs of the wooden covers: a scene or allegorical figure at top, then a grid or row of heraldic shields, then a block of inscribed Gothic or Roman lettering, useful for shield shapes, civic emblems, ruled text panels, and worn painted surfaces.
