Pictura loquens; sive, Heroicarum tabularum Hadriani Schoonebeeck, enarratio et explicatio
Ludolph Smids's Latin verse explications of Adriaan Schoonebeek's heroic plates, printed by Schoonebeek in Amsterdam in 1695 for learned readers of emblem and antiquarian literature. Sixty-three small upright copper engravings stage episodes from Greek and Roman history in crowded foregrounds — armoured soldiers, kneeling and pleading women, enthroned rulers behind heavy drapery, ships and temple steps — built from dense cross-hatching that designers can lift as compact figure groups or dramatic gesture studies.
