Pictures of the French, a series of literary and graphic delineations of French character
A London edition of the French social-type sketches by Jules Janin, Cormenin and others, published by W.S. Orr in 1840 for British readers curious about Parisian manners and dress. The wood engravings show costumed urban types—concierges, grisettes, soldiers, bourgeois in nightcap and dressing gown—in small vignettes, some built into drop capitals, drawn with dense hatching against blank or lightly scored grounds.
