Pievx desirs imites des latins
A French edition of Herman Hugo's Jesuit emblem book Pia Desideria, engraved by Boëtius à Bolswert and printed by Jean Cnobbaert in Antwerp in 1627 for Catholic devotional readers. The upright plates pair a child-like soul with a winged Divine Love in bare landscapes under rayed suns, cloud-borne heavenly courts and personified sun and moon, with fine hatched skies and shorthand foliage useful for line-engraved figure groups, light-burst motifs and small framed vignettes.
