Pinocchio : the tale of a puppet
Carlo Collodi's Pinocchio in English translation, illustrated by Charles Folkard and published in 1911 by J.M. Dent in London and E.P. Dutton in New York for child readers. The pen-and-ink drawings set the puppet—peaked cap, ruffled collar, rose-patterned smock, striped breeches—in loose running and gesturing poses against bare paper, giving designers isolated figure silhouettes, motion lines, and simple hatched ground shadows usable as cutouts.
