Pisa
Paul Schubring's Pisa, issued in Leipzig by E.A. Seemann in 1902 as part of a German series of art-city handbooks, surveys the city's medieval architecture and sculpture for students and travelling readers. The 119 halftone plates reproduce photographs of pulpit and tomb reliefs, Gothic tabernacles with gabled canopies, and dim cathedral interiors of striped marble piers, giving designers crowded figure groups, carved architectural frames, and strong light-and-shadow stonework.
