Felsina pittrice : vite de pittori bolognesi
Carlo Cesare Malvasia's Felsina pittrice, printed in Bologna in 1678 by the heir of Domenico Barbieri, collects lives of Bolognese painters for local readers, patrons and connoisseurs. Woodcut ornament dominates: empty oval laurel and ribbon-bound wreath cartouches awaiting portraits, foliate initials, and shields with wavy bands and cinquefoils, all usable as ready-made frames, monograms and heraldic devices.
